How to Apply to University in South Africa
A step-by-step guide from Grade 11 to matric. Stay on track and never miss a deadline.
1 Grade 11 — Terms 1 & 2: Research
- Research universities and programs that interest you.
- Use the APS calculator to estimate your score and see what you may qualify for.
- Start a shortlist of 3-5 programs at different universities.
2 Grade 11 — Terms 3 & 4: Prepare
- Check application opening and closing dates — some open as early as April.
- Gather required documents: ID, Grade 11 results, proof of payment.
- Apply to bursaries and financial aid (NSFAS opens around August-November).
3 Grade 12 — Term 1: Apply
- Submit all applications before closing dates. Don't wait until the last day.
- Keep copies of application confirmations and reference numbers.
- Track deadlines and documents — a checklist helps.
4 Grade 12 — Term 2 onwards: Respond
- Read offer letters carefully — note conditions and response deadlines.
- Accept your preferred offer and arrange accommodation and finances.
- If you don't get in, explore your Plan B options.
