How to Accept a University Offer in South Africa

What to do when you receive a university offer — and how to respond.

When you get an offer

  • Read the offer letter carefully: programme, campus, conditions (e.g. minimum final marks), and response deadline.
  • Note whether it's firm, conditional, or waitlist — and what you must do next (e.g. accept online, pay a registration fee).
  • If you have more than one offer, compare programmes, costs, and deadlines before deciding.

What to accept and when

  • Respond by the date given. Missing the deadline can mean losing the place.
  • You can usually accept one firm offer. Accepting a second may cancel the first — check the university's rules.
  • If you're waitlisted, you may need to accept another offer as a backup and then switch if a place opens.
  • If you decline, do it formally (as per the university's instructions) so the place can go to someone else.
