Plan B: What to Do If You Don't Get Into University
If you don't get your first choice, you still have options. Here's what to do next.
Late applications
Some universities and colleges take late applications (often with a fee or for programmes with space). Check each institution's website for "late application" or "second round" dates.
TVET colleges
TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) colleges offer certificates and diplomas in many fields — from engineering to business — and can be a pathway to further study or employment. NSFAS funds many TVET programmes.
Gap year
A year out can be used to work, volunteer, or improve marks (e.g. rewrite a subject). Plan it well: save money, keep learning, and reapply the next year with a stronger application.
Reapply next year
Improving your results and reapplying is common. Use the APS calculator to see where to focus, and apply again when applications open. Check deadlines to be ready.
