Study Tips & Exam Technique

Build strong study habits and learn how to write better exams. For Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners.

1 How to study effectively

  • Study in short blocks (25-40 minutes) with 5-10 minute breaks.
  • Summarise in your own words and teach someone else to check understanding.
  • Use past papers under exam conditions to practise time management.
  • Focus on one subject per session instead of jumping between many.
  • Revise the same material on different days (spaced repetition) to remember better.

2 Exam technique

  • Read the whole question and mark how many marks it carries before answering.
  • Do questions you know first, then come back to harder ones.
  • Write clearly and show your working in Maths and Science so you can get method marks.
  • Watch the time: divide the total minutes by total marks to know how long per mark.
  • Leave a few minutes at the end to check your answers.

3 Time management

  • Use a weekly timetable and block time for each subject and for past papers.
  • Prioritise subjects you find hardest or that need the most improvement.
  • Set a fixed time to switch off (e.g. no phones 30 minutes before bed) to sleep better.
  • Break big tasks (e.g. "finish Maths chapter") into smaller steps you can tick off.
