Parent Guide: Supporting Your Child Through Matric
How to support your child's learning without taking over.
Create a good study space
A quiet, well-lit spot with space for books and a device (if needed) helps. Reduce distractions like TV or phones during study time.
When to check in
- Ask once a day how school or studying went, without grilling them on every mark.
- After tests or reports, focus on what they found hard and what they'll do differently next time.
- Support a regular routine (e.g. same time each evening for homework or revision) rather than last-minute cramming.
Encourage ownership
Help them plan (e.g. what to do this week) but let them do the work. Praise effort and improvement, not only high marks. If they're stuck, encourage them to ask their teacher or use study tools.
